This Christmas, we’re asking schools and organisations across Northern Ireland to help children who may not experience Christmas as a time of joy and celebration.

For most children, Christmas is a time of excitement, family, fun and making memories, but for around 40,000 children and young people in Northern Ireland, Christmas can bring increased stress, uncertainty and fear because they are living with a family member who uses alcohol, drugs or has poor mental health.

This is known as hidden harm and because it often happens behind closed doors, these children can feel isolated and unable to talk about what is happening at home.

Could you help shine a light for local children experiencing hidden harm?

Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for these young people. Schools and other support services are closed or operating at reduced capacity, family and financial pressures can increase and alcohol & drug use may become more prevalent.

The statements used in this video were provided by young people who have been supported by our Steps to Cope service when we asked them to share their experiences of hidden harm.  This allows their voices to be heard.

Every pound raised will go directly towards helping local young people living with hidden harm, giving them the chance to experience a new normal where they feel safe, supported and valued.
