Shine a Light This Christmas
This Christmas, we’re asking schools across Northern Ireland to help children who may not experience Christmas as a time of joy and celebration.
For most children, Christmas is a time of excitement, family, fun and making memories, butt for around 40,000 children and young people in Northern Ireland, Christmas can bring increased stress, uncertainty and fear because they are living with a family member who uses alcohol, drugs or has poor mental health.
This is known as hidden harm, and because it often happens behind closed doors, these children can feel isolated and unable to talk about what is happening at home.
Could your pupils help shine a light for children experiencing hidden harm?
Christmas can be a particularly difficult time for these young people. Schools and other support services are closed or operating at reduced capacity, family and financial pressures can increase and alcohol and drug use may become more prevalent.
How can your school get involved?
From festive fun to creative fundraising, there are lots of ways to make a difference:
🎄 Christmas Jumper Day
🧁 Christmas bake sale or tuck shop
🎅 Festive quiz or classroom competition
🎁 Collection at your Christmas play or concert
⭐ Your own Christmas fundraising idea
Big or small, every fundraiser can make a difference.
Funds raised will help ASCERT continue delivering our Steps to Cope service, supporting young people aged 11 and over who are affected by difficulties at home.
Together, we can help children feel seen, heard and supported, and remind them that what happens at home is not their fault.
The statements used in this video were provided by young people who have been supported by our Steps to Cope service when we asked them to share their experiences of hidden harm. This allows their voices to be heard
Every pound raised will go directly towards helping local young people living with hidden harm, giving them the chance to experience a new normal where they feel safe, supported, and valued.
