With revision and exams now underway, the charity says some teenagers may be relying on nicotine products in an attempt to cope with stress, anxiety or tiredness, despite the potential impact vaping can have on both physical and emotional health.

ASCERT, Northern Ireland’s leading charity working to reduce drug and alcohol-related harm, states it is increasingly concerned that vaping is becoming normalised among some young people during stressful periods such as exams.

“We know that some young people may vape because they believe it helps them manage stress or feel calmer in the short term.
Self-harm Intervention Programme (SHIP) Service Client Feedback.

The following feedback was received from a client in ASCERT’s SHIP Service.

What did you find most helpful about the SHIP service?

I would like to especially comment on [my counsellor] who guided me in my worst and lowest times. I communicated to her for six weeks and for someone I’d never met before, she not only listened to all my problems, she understood. I appreciate your patience and the safe space you gave me. You have genuinely helped me find strength I didn’t know I had and untangle a lot of issues in my life. I will continue to move forward thanks to you.

After using ASCERT services, do you feel hopeful and positive about your future?

I absolutely do. On my first week, I felt shame in admitting I needed help. It felt like a weakness. But after it, I’m recommending it to others who feel the same way. Because now I realise there is no shame in needing help.

Is there any other feedback you would like to share?

As I mentioned above. I would just like to thank [my counsellor] for listening to everything I said. She took it all on board and she remembered personal things I had previously discussed. She helped me see things I couldn’t see and gave me such solid advice. Thanks again, it’s meant a whole lot.

Would you use this service again if needed?

Strongly Agree

What is the Self-harm Intervention Programme (SHIP)?

SHIP provides people who self-harm with quick access to support and counselling to help deal with the issues that are causing distress. It equips people with new ways of coping with problems.

Who is it for?

SHIP is suitable for people who have self-harmed and have personal or social problems that are causing distress. Before you are referred to SHIP, your needs will be assessed to make sure this is the right service for you. Some people who self-harm may need care by mental health services in the local Trust rather than SHIP.

SHIP also offers a short period of education and support to people who care for someone who self-harms (eg a parent, partner or friend).

Laura Beacom, three-time European Sport Stacking Champion from East Belfast, has joined the ASCERT Sport Stacking Challenge, a new initiative encouraging young people across primary schools, youth clubs, and sporting organisations to take part in a fun, active campaign promoting wellbeing, confidence, and teamwork during Children’s Mental Health Week (9th – 15th February 2026).

Laura has excelled in sport stacking for years, winning multiple European titles and competing internationally. Now, she is passionate about growing the sport in Northern Ireland and giving more young people the chance to experience the excitement and benefits of sport stacking.

Laura said:
“I’ve been fortunate to achieve so much in sport stacking, but what really motivates me now is helping the next generation get involved. It’s a fun, fast-paced sport that builds focus, coordination, and teamwork, and I want to see more children across Northern Ireland enjoying it.”

The ASCERT Sport Stacking Challenge invites primary schools, youth groups, and sporting clubs to register and take part in a series of activities. Participating groups will receive step-by-step sport stacking tutorials, mindfulness journals to support young people’s mental wellbeing, and other resources to help bring communities together through friendly competition.

As part of the campaign, groups who raise over £250 will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a visit and masterclass with Laura Beacom, giving pupils and members a hands-on experience with one of Europe’s top sport stackers.

Gary McMichael, Chief Executive of ASCERT, said:
“We are thrilled to be working with Laura on this campaign. Her dedication to growing sport stacking and encouraging young people to be active, confident, and engaged fits perfectly with our goals of supporting positive change in our local communities. This challenge is a fun way for children and young people to connect, build skills, and support ASCERT’s vital work, from youth services to programmes addressing alcohol, drug-related and mental health issues across Northern Ireland.”

Laura added:
“It’s amazing to see young people discovering sport stacking, supporting each other, and having fun while learning new skills. I can’t wait to see even more schools and youth groups taking part this year.”

ASCERT is Northern Ireland’s leading alcohol, drug-related and mental health charity, providing a wide range of services for children, young people, families, and communities. From early intervention and prevention programmes to youth services and community support, ASCERT works to help young people grow in confidence, resilience, and wellbeing.

The ASCERT Sport Stacking Challenge makes participation easy and enjoyable. Organisers hope to see widespread involvement from schools, youth groups, and sporting clubs across Northern Ireland, bringing energy, teamwork, and a focus on wellbeing to Children’s Mental Health Week.

ASCERT, Northern Ireland’s leading alcohol, drug and mental-health charity, welcomed the launch of the Police Service Northern Ireland’s (PSNI’s) winter campaign to crack down on drink and drug driving.

Figures released by the PSNI stated that 298 people were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug driving in December 2024 in Northern Ireland.

“We stand firmly behind this campaign,” said Gary McMichael, Chief Executive of ASCERT. “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a choice that can destroy lives and not just your own, but the lives of innocent people on the roads. With winter nights drawing in and festive socialising on the rise, the increased police presence and roadside testing will send a clear message: there is no excuse for getting behind the wheel impaired.”

He added: “At ASCERT we work every day with people whose lives have been turned upside down by alcohol and drugs. We know how quickly things can spiral out of control when alcohol or substances play a part, and that’s why we support every effort to prevent harm at source.”

Tips for a safe night out and getting home safely

Plan ahead: if you’re going out, decide in advance how you’ll get home without driving. Book a taxi or use public transport

Avoid drinking or using drugs if you know you’ll be driving. Even small amounts can impair your judgement.

Look out for your friends: ensure no one attempts to drive if they’ve been drinking or using substances.

Don’t leave your drink unattended, and watch out for drink-spiking, especially at busy venues.

Keep the number of a taxi company saved on your phone, or use a trusted friend who’s sober to drive you home.

“No one should feel they have to cope alone,” said McMichael. “If substance use or its consequences are affecting your life, reach out. We’re ready to listen and support you.”

Anyone wishing to access support for their alcohol or drug use can contact ASCERT at info@ascert.biz or 0800 2545 123 or visit www.ascert.biz.

As Road Safety Week gets underway across the UK, ASCERT, Northern Ireland’s leading alcohol, drug-related and mental health charity, is reminding everyone that the safest choice behind the wheel is to never drink and drive.

As Road Safety Week gets underway across the UK, ASCERT, Northern Ireland’s leading alcohol, drug-related and mental health charity, is reminding everyone that the safest choice behind the wheel is to never drink and drive.

This year’s Road Safety Week theme, “Safe vehicles save lives,” highlights how well-maintained vehicles and responsible driving are key to preventing crashes on our roads. Every year, lives are lost and families are changed forever due to avoidable collisions, and alcohol remains a significant factor in many of them.

According to the Northern Ireland Road Safety Strategy (NIRSS) to 2030 Annual Statistical Report, 69 people were killed on Northern Ireland’s roads in 2024. Of these, 16 fatalities happened in crashes where alcohol or drugs were recorded as a contributing factor.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health’s Health Survey (NI) 2022/23 found that 77% of adults in Northern Ireland drink alcohol, with a quarter of men and one in ten women regularly exceeding recommended weekly limits. With alcohol such a common part of social life, ASCERT is urging everyone to plan ahead this Road Safety Week, by arranging a lift, booking a taxi, or designating a sober driver before heading out.

Gary McMichael, Chief Executive of ASCERT, said:

“Every life lost on our roads is a preventable tragedy. Alcohol and drugs can seriously impair your judgement, reaction times, and coordination, making even short journeys dangerous. We’re asking everyone to take personal responsibility this Road Safety Week. The only safe approach is to never, ever drink and drive.”

ASCERT provides a range of free, confidential services to support to individuals, families, and workplaces across Northern Ireland. These include alcohol and drug information, early intervention programmes, and education sessions to raise awareness about the impact of substance use on safety and wellbeing.

McMichael added:

“At ASCERT, we’re committed to creating a society where people are protected from the harm caused by alcohol and drugs. Road safety starts with each of us making safer choices, for ourselves, our passengers, and everyone sharing the road.”

Road Safety Week is coordinated nationally by Brake, the road safety charity, and supported locally by ASCERT and other organisations working to reduce deaths and serious injuries on Northern Ireland’s roads. Together, their message is clear: safe vehicles and sober drivers save lives.

ASCERT, Northern Ireland’s leading alcohol, drug and mental health charity, is raising awareness about the impact of alcohol on menopause symptoms, urging women to “rethink their drink” as part of a new information campaign highlighting the often-overlooked connection between midlife hormonal changes and alcohol consumption.

Menopause can bring a range of challenging symptoms, including hot flushes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, mood swings and anxiety. According to ASCERT, alcohol can make many of these symptoms worse.

“Many women tell us they use alcohol to relax or cope with stress during menopause,” said Gary McMichael, Chief Executive of ASCERT. “But what they might not realise is that alcohol can actually intensify symptoms such as hot flushes, sleep problems and mood changes. We want to encourage women to think about how much they drink and explore healthier ways to manage this life stage.”

Alcohol and menopause: a difficult mix

As women age, their bodies change, losing muscle, gaining fat, and breaking down alcohol more slowly. This means alcohol stays in the system longer and can have stronger effects. During menopause, these changes can contribute to weight gain, increased anxiety, and disrupted sleep.

Heavy drinking can also have longer-term effects. “After menopause, women’s bones naturally become thinner,” explained McMichael. “Drinking too much alcohol can make this worse, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Alcohol use in midlife is also linked to higher risks of heart disease and certain cancers, including breast cancer.”

Women and alcohol: why the difference matters

Alcohol affects women differently than men. Women tend to be smaller and have less of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol in the stomach, meaning their blood alcohol levels rise more quickly. Because women generally have more body fat and less body water, the alcohol becomes more concentrated in the bloodstream.

“These biological differences mean women can be more affected by alcohol than men, even when drinking the same amount,” McMichael added. “Understanding that is key to making informed choices about drinking.”

Making small changes can make a big difference

The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that both men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units per week, spread evenly over three or more days. ASCERT advises simple, practical steps to help reduce alcohol intake:

Make a plan: Set a limit and keep track of your drinking.

Set a budget: Decide how much you’ll spend on alcohol and stick to it.

Choose smaller sizes or low-alcohol drinks.

Space out your drinks: Alternate with water or soft drinks.

Find other ways to unwind: Try exercise, mindfulness, or creative hobbies.

Take alcohol-free days each week.

Is it time for a change?

ASCERT’s Rethink Your Drink campaign invites women to reflect on their relationship with alcohol using the steps AWARE, PREPARE, ENGAGE, a practical framework for making sustainable lifestyle changes.

“Menopause is a time of transition,” McMichael said. “By becoming more aware and making small, positive changes, women can protect their health, improve their wellbeing, and feel more in control.”

This recognition is a proud moment for our team, our volunteers, and the communities we serve.

This award is a huge honour for both Emma and ASCERT, recognising her outstanding dedication and the positive impact of our organisation’s work in supporting recovery across Northern Ireland. The 2023 Kids’ Life and Times (KLT) survey of 11-year-olds in Northern Ireland found a decline in overall wellbeing compared to previous years, with many children reporting worries about peer relationships, family dynamics, and pressure to do well at school, all common concerns for pupils starting Year 8.
