SMART Recovery

What is SMART Recovery?

SMART Recovery is an evidenced-informed recovery method grounded in Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), that supports people with substance dependencies or problem behaviours to:

  • Build and maintain motivation
  • Cope with urges and cravings
  • Manage thoughts, feelings and behaviours
  • Live a balanced life

Our weekly meetings follow a number of guiding principles to ensure everyone gets the best out of the time available.  We ensure that our meetings are a safe and non-judgemental space and open to all adults.

ASCERT facilitates weekly SMART Recovery meetings that are free of charge and open to everyone aged over 18.

“I’ve found my time at the SMART Recovery group extremely beneficial. I’ve found out so many ways of dealing with intrusive thoughts etc that could lead me back to my old ways. The way I have learned to understand my thoughts and feelings has been second to none. When I first started the group I was scared and angry but I no longer am. The facilitators and group members have been fantastic and how they talk about repeated behaviours and thoughts is very easy to understand. SMART Recovery has definitely helped me on my road to recovery.”

SMART has been an integral part of my path to recovery, helping me to maintain sobriety, better understand my addictive behaviour and thinking patterns, manage my emotions and build resilience to more readily cope with living. I didn’t realise how alone I had become in addiction nor how unmanageable my life had become.

Coming to my first SMART meeting was one of the first steps I took in reengaging with the world and others again and the weekly groups with welcoming fellow attendees and facilitators has helped me feel ‘part of’ again and less alone. The peer support is vital – to be able to share experiences and difficulties with others who understand what you’re going through has helped me navigate and overcome challenges in my recovery that I couldn’t have faced alone.

The SMART group and resources have over time equipped me with a practical toolkit of support to navigate triggers, thoughts and feelings to successfully plan to manage situations and events in life to safeguard my sobriety and continue my recovery journey.”

“Something I didn’t expect was that I would learn so much about myself and how my brain and thought process works which has been invaluable because the tools go beyond just managing addictive behaviour – they help me everyday in creating and living a more balanced life overall.”
